Dr. Betty Jane Wendt Mayer of Deland, FL, has sadly left us on Saturday, August 5th, 2023. She died peacefully at the end, with family spending time with her in her final days. Betty was born October 10, 1945, grew up in Coral Gables, Fl. She attended the University of Florida in the early 1960’s where she was Homecoming Princess, Military Ball Queen and Sigma Chi Derby Queen; completing degrees at UCF and USF. She returned to college to become a respected Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (MSN) in emergency room practice; and a Doctor (Ph.D.) of Nursing and Public Health. After practicing in South Fl and Orlando emergency departments, most of her advanced career was at her beloved University of Central Florida, as faculty. Her private passion was Labrador Retriever AKC competition and breeding. She completed eight championship dogs under the kennel name of Impulse Labradors. She also took great pride in the accomplishments of her two sons and stepsons. Dr. Mayer is predeceased by her parents Elizabeth (Betty) McKenna Wendt and Charles Russell Wendt, Sr. from New Jersey and most recently of Deltona, FL; and by her brother, US Army Major Charles Russell Wendt, Jr. of Miami. She is survived by her husband, Bob Mayer of Deland; her son Russell DeMartino and wife Angela, (granddaughters Dana and Jana) of Walpole, MA; son Sean DeMartino, Nina (grandchildren Marius and Nicole) and Jacklyn (granddaughter Sofia) of Winter Park, FL; stepson Chad Mayer and Valerie (grandchildren Eden and Beau) of Los Angeles; stepson Ryan Mayer of Jacksonville, FL; and Sister in Law, Virginia Wendt and nieces and nephews in Colorado, (Roger Wendt, Rebecca Reid and Cindy Wood).
