Charles Whitener, 54, of DeLand, Florida, passed away on April 19, 2026.
Born on December 10, 1971, in DeLand, Florida, Charles was a proud graduate of T. DeWitt Taylor Middle-High School.
After graduating, Charles served in the military as an Army Medic.
He dedicated twenty two years of his life to serving and protecting his community as a Senior Deputy with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Over the course of his distinguished career, he served in numerous roles, including Patrol Deputy, Patrol Sergeant, Field Training Deputy, Judicial Services, and the Family Resource Center.
Charles was widely respected for his leadership, integrity, and compassion. Among his many accomplishments, he received four Unit Commendations and played a meaningful role in the establishment of the Volusia Family Resource Center. His commitment to the community extended well beyond his official duties, as he actively supported programs such as 100 Deputies 100 Kids, the Sheriff’s Office Toy Drive, Fishing with a Deputy, and the Back-to-School Backpack initiative.
Outside of his career, Charles found joy in the simple things in life. He loved camping, boating, and caring for his farm animals. He was a golfer, hunter, and fisherman, but above all, he cherished time spent with his family and close friends.
Charles is survived by his loving partner, Katina Ashford; his sister, Donna Williams, and brother-in-law, Steve Williams; and his brother, Clifton Whitener. He also leaves behind his children, Carl Bentley Jr. (Schylar), Cory Whitener, Cody Whitener, Brooke Ashford, Paige Hartwell (Jarrett), and Katelyn Hamilton (Justin), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Elaine Hartwell, Teagan Bentley, Tatum Bentley, Auden Hamilton, and Palmer Hamilton.
Charles will be remembered for his strength, his quiet dedication, and his unwavering love for his family and community. His legacy of service and kindness will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
