David Dewain Stowers, 71, of DeLand passed away August 17, 2024 at Halifax Health/UF Health Deltona. He was born to Deloris and Truman Stowers in West Hamlin, West Virginia on March 24, 1953. Dave lived in many different places, including his birthplace West Hamlin, WV, Chester, VA, Jacksonville, FL, and Malaga, Spain before ending up in DeLand, FL. He received his Bachelors in physical education from Stetson University and his Masters in school counseling from Shippensburg University, PA. Dave enjoyed guiding Middle School and High School students towards success for many decades at Taylor Dewitt Middle/High School. He also there coached Varsity boys basketball for many seasons. Dave lived for sports. While In high school at Thomas Dale, he played on the basketball, football and baseball teams. He excelled at basketball. He continued his basketball success in college as a star guard, nicknamed "Point Machine" at Jacksonville U and "The Hammer" at Stetson U. Dave was part of one of Stetson University's greatest squads in 1975. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and loved his brothers all through his life. After college Dave went on to play professionally in Malaga, Spain. In later years he was an avid pool player and as of late, mostly enjoyed playing Poker at the Moose Lodge and Gators Dockside. Dave also found enjoyment in cooking, chess, backgammon, gardening, and home renovation. Dave was a Christian and had a strong belief in God. Dave is survived by his three children Ryan (46), Matthew (43), and Christina (37), his brother, Steve (73), his #1 favorite ex wife, Sue (70), and his grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Emilia (5), Della (4), and Jude (4). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 10:00 A.M. at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel in DeLand. A celebration of life luncheon will be held afterwards at the Victoria Gardens Clubhouse from 12:00 noon to 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the Dave Stowers Scholarship Fund at T.Dewitt Taylor High School.
