David Lane Sutherland, 85, passed away on November 16, 2025 in DeLand, Florida, the city he loved and called home since moving there in February of 1970.
He was born on January 24, 1940 in Brockton, Massachusetts to Lundie G. and Pauline B. Sutherland.
David is survived by his sons Jeff, Tod and his wife Tawnya, and Bill and his wife Lisa. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as his younger sister Marcia Pearson and her husband Bill of Ceresco, Nebraska, and his younger brother Paul Sutherland and his wife Ellen of Proctor, Vermont. He was preceded in death by his daughter Kathy Rae, by his wife Theresa Sutherland, and by Janet Sutherland, his wife of nearly 25 years. David built a long and steady career with the City of DeLand Water Department, serving the community for 45 years. He also gave nearly five decades to the DeLand Fire Department as a Reserve Captain, service that became a central part of his life and identity. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965 as an Aircraft Jet Engine Mechanic. Faith was an important part of his life. David was a loyal member of First Presbyterian Church in DeLand from the day he arrived in 1970. He served as an Usher and a Deacon and attended services every Sunday for as long as his health allowed.
Radio work was another lifelong passion. David (N4GMU) spent many hours as a Ham Radio operator and ran the local repeater for years. Around town, he was known for the fire truck that carries his name, the Sutherland. He helped secure and restore the old engine for the DeLand Fire Department, and it has become a familiar sight in nearly every parade. Each Christmas it carries Santa through the streets of DeLand, something that always meant a lot to him.
A small family service will take place at First Presbyterian Church in January. The exact date will be shared with family and friends once it is set.
