Elmer Garey

Elmer Garey, age 95, of Satsuma, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Elmer was born on May 25, 1931, in Lake Winola, Pennsylvania, to Elmer Garey and Helen Rogers. He grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania and developed a strong work ethic and love for family that remained with him throughout his life.

At the age of 18, Elmer joined the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War as a Field Wireman. During his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.

Following his service, Elmer met the love of his life, Mary Garey. Together they shared 50 years of marriage and built a life centered around family and love. After Mary's passing in 2010, Elmer continued to enjoy life through his love of animals and by remaining active in his community.

Elmer was a dedicated member of the Golden Fit Club in Georgetown, Florida, and remained active in the program well into his 90s. His enthusiasm earned him the distinction of having an exercise named after him, known as "The Elmer." He was also a faithful member of Hope Lutheran Church, where many knew him affectionately as "Smiley."

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Garey and Helen Rogers; his beloved wife, Mary Garey; his oldest daughter, Mary Ann Petralia; his oldest son, Michael Salvaggio; his sisters, Emily, Grace, Dorothy, and Bertha; his brothers, Roy, Charles, and Richard Garey; and his cherished dog, Coco, who he is now reunited with.

He is survived by his son, Charles Salvaggio (Carol); his daughter, Virginia Berardi (Vince); his daughter-in-law, Angelina Salvaggio; his brother, Victor Garey; and many other loving family members. He leaves his beautiful legacy of his loving heart to so many of his family members, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all those who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026, at GraceLife Church, 275 East Main Street, Avon, New York 14414. Family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 6:30 PM, with the service beginning at 6:30 PM. A gathering will follow the service and continue until 8:00 PM.
