Ernest Beasley Jr passed away peacefully at the age of 101, at the VA Nursing Home in Daytona Beach, Florida on July 8th. He was born in Claxton, Georgia to Ernest and Nelly Beasley on January 7th, 1923. The family moved to DeLand, Florida when he was 9 months old. They eventually moved to Daytona Beach where he graduated from Mainland High School.
After High School he went to work in a shipyard building military ships as a tool and die maker. During World War II he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific on the Aircraft Carrier USS Boxer CV-21, which was one of the ships he helped build. Before shipping out he married his High School sweetheart, Marvena Hatcher.
After the war he worked at Florida Power and Light Company for over 30 years. He worked his way up from machinist to maintenance supervisor. During his later years at the company he lived in Pierson, Florida. Upon retirement he started a fern business and continued to develop the property where he lived.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife of 78 years, Marvena; and his daughter Karen Andrews. He is survived by sons Kevin and Richard Beasley of Pierson, Florida and Marvin Beasley of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
The Christian viewing will be held on Monday July 15th from 5 to 7pm at the Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in DeLand, Florida. Burial will be at 10am Tuesday July 16th at the Methodist Cemetery on Washington Avenue in Pierson, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Florida United Methodist Children's home in Enterprise, Florida.
