Ethel Marie Haddock Juneau, 66, left Earth for the spiritual beyond on July 28, 2024. She is survived by her two children — Jennifer "Jenny" Juneau Haupt (Joshua) and Robert "Bobby" Juneau (Melissa) — as well as her stepson, Michael "Little Mike" Juneau Jr. (Victoria). The protective oldest of five children, Ethel also leaves behind her four younger siblings: Steven "Steve" Haddock, Russell "Russ" Haddock, Darlene Haddock Walker (James "Jim"), and William "Billy" Haddock (Christine "Chrissy"), plus sister-in-law Mary Lin Mekeel Haddock. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Michael "Mike" Juneau Sr., her mother, Shirley Mae Bailey Haddock, and her father, Robert "Bob" L. Haddock.
Ethel was a matriarch, but not your typical one. Born on Dec. 22, 1957, she later assumed the responsibility of a "second mother" for her siblings, which is a trait that she would carry throughout her lifetime. Always with a family-first mindset, she found a way to hold true to her beliefs while making those around her comfortable with their own individual ones. She was the epitome of loyalty and grit, and would stand up for you until (and, truly, even after) she couldn't anymore.
A pop-culture fan to the point where it eventually inspired her daughter's career as an entertainment journalist, Ethel loved "Jeopardy!" and movies, particularly from the 1940s through 1970s, with a special love for musicals and stories with deep familial messages. As an "honorary hippie," she revered Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elton John, the Beatles, Aerosmith, the Bee Gees, and many other groups from the '70s especially. She also loved to read, especially Danielle Steel, and enjoyed binge-watching old "Law & Order" episodes, often to the amused chagrin of her children. Through a tough exterior, Ethel was the most emotionally in touch person - the type who would cry at a Werther's ad (she loved commercials) and voluntarily watch old "Touched by an Angel" episodes just to get a good sob out. She wore her heart on her sleeve and inspired others to be vulnerable too, modeling the fact that emotion makes you stronger, not weaker.
While Ethel self-admittedly left something to be desired with her meatloaf and beef roasts, she was a whiz when it came to pork roasts, tiramisu, chocolate-chip pancakes, no-bake cheesecake, and making every holiday special for her children, even into their adulthood. She never forgot a birthday, always making sure a cake and candle were involved and calling her children at their exact times of birth (shout-out to Bobby's 2:43 a.m. wake-up calls), which is something they will continue to do for each other throughout their lives, at her request.
Aside from her immediate family, Ethel was blessed with one granddaughter, her "Cuddle Bunny" Norah Josephine Haupt, and three step-grandchildren: Jessica Juneau Jones (Christopher "Chris"), Brooke Juneau, and Logan Juneau, as well as one great-granddaughter, Leila Neveah Jones. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends who loved her dearly.
A memorial for Ethel will be held in the coming weeks in the greater Daytona Beach area. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to reach out to family members for details. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Ethel's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
