Frederick Cole Obituary

Cole, Frederick Arthur

(1/27/47- 3/2/24)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frederick (Fred) A. Cole, our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle, aged 77. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a sudden illness. He was born January 27, 1947, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Alfred and Anna Cole. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1965, and earned his Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in 1969. He met his first wife, Joyce Hollingshead, after beginning his career in 1969 as an electrical engineer at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1972, they moved to Jackson, Michigan, where Fred began working at Sparton Electronics, they became active members of Trinity Wesleyan Church for many years, and they raised their three children. Most important to Fred was his family. His love and devotion to his children was evident, and he never missed their important events. Even after the end of their marriage, Fred and Joyce remained a part of each other’s lives, actively participating in the lives of their children and grandchildren. In 1999, Fred met his beloved Celia, their personalities complementing each other’s perfectly. They married in 2003 and both embraced each other’s families fully. In 2005, Fred’s company transferred them to Debary, Florida, where they explored their new state, camped, fished, and were active in their run/walk club. Celia and Fred did everything together. Upon retirement, they became snowbirds, visiting family and friends in Michigan during the summers. During his retirement, he remained active at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Orange City, singing in the choir, playing in the handbell choir, and being a part of the financial audit team. Throughout his life, Fred showed his devotion to Christ with his actions through his service to the church. Fred enjoyed spending time with his close-knit siblings and their families throughout his entire life. He was always ready to lend a hand for their projects and loved to attend every family gathering. Fred had many hobbies and interests. Whether it was building a dollhouse for his daughters, a radio for his son, or doing a home project, he had a meticulous level of detail to his craftsmanship. He loved tinkering with projects, embracing new technology, fishing trips with family and friends, cooking and barbecuing, working in his garden, photography, music, and camping. Fred is survived by his loving wife, Celia; his children, Ryan (Kami) Cole, Erin (Mark Dorich) Cole, and Emily (Jesse) Cole-Rose; stepchildren, Sandra (Gary) Gawlik, Jerry (Shawn) Scalpone, Dave (Jeanine) Scalpone, and Val (Chris) Erlandson; siblings, Alan (Louise Trevillyan) Cole, Lois (Art) Sherwood; Larry (Kate) Cole, Mary (Gil) Suzor, Jerry (Sue) Cole; grandchildren Dylan, Kevin, Kian, Myla, Elias, Anna, Craig, Morgan, Kristen, Hunter, Brooke, Tanner, Jacob, Sam, Ryan, Olivia, Hannah, Grady; great grandchildren, Aria and Luka, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Anna (Herlein) Cole. Fred's departure leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him. However, his legacy lives on through the indelible mark he left on the hearts of family, friends, and colleagues. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association in Fred's memory. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Emmaus Lutheran Church at 2500 S. Volusia Ave., Orange City, Florida where friends and family can gather to celebrate the life of a remarkable man. A memorial service will also be held in Michigan at a later date. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love that he so generously shared throughout his lifetime.
