Glenda R. Higdon

Glenda Rigg Higdon, age 82, died peacefully at home on February 24th surrounded by her loving family. Glenda was preceded in death by her Husband John Higdon, her parents, Evelyn & Neville Rigg, her brothers and sisters Bert, Norine, Jeanette, Jerry and Joe. Glenda is survived by her identical twin sister Brenda Adams who resides in Miamisburg, Ohio. Her two wonderful sons, Hagan (Doreen) Browning of DeLand and Coy (Elizabeth) Browning of Fort Walton Beach. She has four precious grandchildren Cameron, Kellee Jo, Isla Grace and Tice and one great-grandson, Davis. Glenda was born on August 15, 1940. She graduated from Morgan High School in 1958. After a year of working, she attended Eastern Kentucky University and graduated in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in education. From there she taught several years in Morgan, Kentucky. Glenda married her first husband, William “Billy” Browning in 1964 in Falmouth, Kentucky. Upon marrying Billy, they moved from Kentucky to DeLand, Florida. Glenda was hired by Volusia County Schools in 1973. She began her career at Starke Elementary teaching 1st grade where she taught for 25 years, but found her true love of teaching students with disabilities at Boston Avenue School. She continued teaching at Boston Avenue until she retired in 2003 after 40+ years of service in education. She touched the lives of many students and families over her long career. Glenda had a special love in her heart for exceptional children. She was a true teacher and her love for kids was apparent. Glenda was an avid University of Kentucky fan. She enjoyed watching Kentucky basketball every chance she got. She never missed a game. Glenda’s pride and joy in life were her two sons. She could always be found cooking and attending any and all family functions. She was a great friend to many, a wonderful mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She will be forever missed and always in our hearts. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, March 23rd at First Assembly of DeLand at 11:00 am, Pastor Modica presiding.
