Ida Giammanco Obituary

Edith “Ida” Tarquinio Giammanco, 92, passed away after a long illness Wednesday, March 30, 2022 in DeLand, Florida. Born 1929 in Aliquippa, PA she was the last surviving child of ten born to Enrico and Vincenza (Di Clemente) Tarquinio. In 1948 Ida graduated from Aliquippa High School, where she was affectionately known as “Dimples.” After high school Ida was a teller at Mellon Bank and a bookkeeper for Standard Can Co. She married the love of her life, Marion Michael (Babe) Giammanco in 1956. Babe’s dancing caught her eye, but his kind spirit captured her heart. In 1965, the couple moved to Vero Beach, FL with their daughter Vincetta. Ida worked as a bookkeeper and teacher’s aide. Babe opened a service station for which she kept the books. After Babe was no longer able to work Ida was the sole bread winner. She also provided his care for many years, with the loving help of family members who often spent their vacations visiting the couple and helping out. Ida moved to DeLand in 1992. She worked as a paraprofessional, volunteer and substitute teacher at George Marks Elementary (where she was known as “Mrs. G”) until age 86, serving a total of 46 years in education. Her volunteer efforts led to recognition by the United Way of Volusia County as a Volunteer of the Year in Education, and as a Daily Point of Life by the Points of Life Foundation. A devoted member of St. Peter Catholic Church, she led the Oktoberfest Cottage Creations booth and served the Adoration Chapel. Ida’s passions were her family and football. She proudly and enthusiastically attended her granddaughter Stephanie’s dance performances and grandson Lex’s basketball games. Stephanie and Lex, and later her great-grandchildren, were the joys of her life. She lived for them. Her favorite football teams were the Steelers and the Fighting Irish. At the annual Superbowl party Ida frequently led her team to victory in the Superbowl Trivia contests. She will be remembered as a spunky little lady and for her Italian dishes: wedding soup, meatballs and sauce and lasagna. The family appreciates the excellent care provided to Ida by the staffs at Good Shepherd and Rose Manor. Ida was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband. She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Vincetta Giammanco Ford (Alex), granddaughter Stephanie Ford (Jeff Maurer) of Orlando, grandson Lex Ford (Morgan), great-grandchildren Olivia, Jack and Logan, sister-in-law Scherry Giammanco (Aliquippa, PA) and brother-in-law Joe Tribone (New Brighton, PA). She was also blessed with many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and great and great-great-nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Italy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Peter Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday April 7 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 359 W. New York Ave., DeLand, FL 32720.
