John Theodore Mathews, affectionately known as “Ted”, Passed away on January 22, 2024 in Orange City FL. Born to Margaret E. Sise and Herbert W. Mathews on April 11, 1961 in Sanford FL.
A proud graduate of Deland High School and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton GA. His career was marked by dedication and excellency. Ted worked as a Firefighter and EMT in Volusia County FL. In 2002 he achieved his childhood dream of becoming a Law enforcement officer. Ted started out as a Deputy Sheriff in Sumter County GA, followed by a police officer in Plains GA and Leslie GA. Ted then became the Chief of Police in the town of which we lived, Leslie GA. Ted medically retired from the Sumter County Sheriffs Dept in 2011 as a Corporal. Ted was an outdoors enthusiast often found in his Bass boat along the St. Johns River fishing or hunting and most recently he loved tending to his garden. In 1999 Ted married the love of his life Brandy Murchison. They were married 25 years. Together they created an amazing life filled with so much love and laughter. Ted was a devoted husband, brother, uncle and great uncle. Proceeded by his parents and brother Herbert “Allen” Mathews. Teds legacy is carried on by his lovely wife Brandy, his sister’s Patricia “Gail” Barnes and Angela Marchese. Teds nieces and nephews Ken, Tony, Mandy, John, Danny, Tracey, Mark, Tammy, Kayla, Ashley, Kyle, Cody and Devin will also feel his absence. Visitation will be held at Allen Summerhill Funeral Home in Orange City FL. on Friday February 2, 2024 at 11am. A gravesite service will follow immediately at 12:15pm at Hollywood Cemetery in Orange City FL. Following the Service will be a Celebration of Life at Orange Tree Village in Orange City FL. Food and Drinks will be available. John “Ted” Mathews will be remembered as a loving husband, brother, uncle, great uncle, friend and mentor. His warmth, wisdom and the joy he brought to every gathering will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. #493
