Joseph Russell Gillette, age 87, transitioned peacefully from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Tuesday evening March 28, 2023. He was at home surrounded by his loving family & wife, Nancy. "Russ" as he was affectionately known, was born in Perry, FL May 28, 1935, to James Ivy and Louise Gillette. He was the third of five children, and made his home in Deland, FL. Russ will be remembered for his many accomplishments during his lifetime. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956 ( during the Korean War). He was the proud father of four children, Burt, Schelda, Debbie, and Terri. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family. He had an amazing talent for creating and inventing. He spent many hours in his workshop carving unique items out of wood. He was a well known businessman in Deland, being the sole proprietor of his landscaping business. Russ always strived to be honest and forthright, having a gentle soul and a soft heart. He took great pride in his yard & beautiful landscaping around his pool that so many loved to enjoy. Those who had the privilege of dining with him knew that fried fish and grits would be meal of choice. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Nancy McCormick Gillette, his three daughters, Schelda Gomez (Angel), Debbie Williams (Ronnie), and Terri Pendray (Brian). Four grandsons, Rusty Crowe (Jamie), Clay Pendray, Ryan Williams, and Alonzo Gomez. One granddaughter, Savannah Nafpliotis (Chris), two great grandsons, Alexander and Anthony Nafpliotis. Sister, Marlene Carroll (Jackie) and numerous family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents James Ivy Gillette and Ella Louise Lord Gillette. His son, Joseph Burt Gillette, his brother, James Harold Gillette, and his two sisters, Lucille Gillette Glunt, and Maxine Gillette Cyrus. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 6-8 PM at Allen Summerhill funeral home in Deland, FL, followed by a celebration of life on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at 11AM also at Allen Summerhill funeral home.
