Katherine “Kitty” Folk James, 85, passed away July 24, 2024, at Hospice Care in Orange City. In accordance with her wishes, a private interment will take place at a later date. Born April 11, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, Kitty was the cherished daughter of William John Folk and Helen Reed Folk. She graduated from DeLand High School in 1957 and attended classes at the University of Florida. Her professional career began as a buyer for Jordan Marsh Department Store, where she utilized her keen eye for fashion and design. On Aug. 3, 1970, Kitty married Craig T. James of DeLand. She was a devoted wife and homemaker, and her support extended beyond the home. She was co-manager of Craig’s campaign for Congress in 1988, where she played a key role in media and advertising. She continued to support him throughout his term in Congress until 1993. Kitty’s commitment to service and community was evident through her various charitable involvements. She served as second vice president of the Junior Service League of DeLand and was a board member of Sugar and Spice Day School. Her dedication also included involvement in The Neighborhood Center and the Garden Circle of DeLand. Her passion for fashion and design was reflected in her personal life as well, as she designed and oversaw the construction of several homes she shared with Craig. Her creativity and attention to detail were a testament to her love for design. She also found joy in reading and learning. Kitty is survived by her husband, former U.S. Congressman Craig T. James; her in-laws, Gregory and Karen James, Phillip and Gayle Koan, and Tom and Kathlyn Harris; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her grace, generosity, and the lasting impact she made on those around her. She will be dearly missed.
