Dorothy Roberta Smith, known to her loved ones as Roberta, passed away peacefully on February 26,2025 at the age of 91. Born on July 30,1933 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Edna Stockton Dyer and Ira B. Dyer, Roberta was raised along with 3 siblings Louise Dyer Craft, Donald Dyer and Remona Dyer Scott, in Albany, KY.
In 1953, Roberta married John W. Smith, also of Albany and together they built a loving family raising three children, John I. Smith (deceased), Cynthia Smith of New York City and Tom Smith of Ponce Inlet, FL.
Roberta worked her way up in the bookkeeping department at JC Penney in Oak Ridge TN before retiring. Roberta was widowed in 2002 and relocated to Deland, FL to be closer to her son and his family. In Deland, Roberta began a vibrant new chapter in her life. There, she formed a close knit circle of friends, enjoyed an active social life and finally had the opportunity to travel, fulfilling a lifelong dream. With friends, Roberta traveled extensively internationally into her 80s.
A woman of intellect and charm, Roberta was an avid reader and a sharp card player, always ready for a card game and lively conversation. She will be remembered for her warmth, resilience and the joy she brought to those around her.
Roberta’s family and friends will forever cherish her memory and the impact she had on their lives. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local library in her honor.
