Wanda Parker Lipscomb was born in Princeton, W.V., on February 16, 1935, to Earl and Arcie Parker. She passed from this earth in her home at Woodland Towers in DeLand, FL, and was received by her Lord Jesus Christ on April 20, 2022. Wanda Parker Lipscomb was born in Princeton, W.V., on February 16, 1935, to Earl and Arcie Parker. She passed from this earth in her home at Woodland Towers in DeLand, FL, and was received by her Lord Jesus Christ on April 20, 2022. Wanda was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Thomas Scott Lipscomb. Wanda was born during the Great Depression, a coal miner’s daughter. She was one of four sisters and grew up on a small farm in the hills of West Virginia. At the age of 10, she stood watching their family home burn to the ground. With no insurance, the family literally was left with the shirts on their backs. Wanda knew her only hope of leaving her life of poverty was to get an education. At the age of 18, after graduating from high school, she boarded a bus to Roanoke, VA, to attend nursing school at Jefferson Hospital. She thrived at school and after 3 years graduated as a Registered Nurse. While attending school in Roanoke, she had a blind date with Tommy Lipscomb, an engineering student at Virginia Tech. The romance flourished, and Wanda and Tommy were wed in 1955. Early in their marriage, the couple had two sons, Thomas Scott Lipscomb Jr. and Robert Wayne Lipscomb. The couple settled in Roanoke after a few early moves, with Tommy working for General Electric as an engineer and Wanda working the night shift at Community Hospital. In 1970, Tommy was transferred to Wilmington, N.C., by GE and the family resided there until their final move to DeLand, FL, in 1975. In DeLand, Wanda worked at West Volusia Hospital for 20 years, and Tommy worked for Brunswick Corp. In 1988, after 33 years of marriage, Tommy died of brain cancer at the age of 54. Wanda loved to travel and spent many summers in Europe with Tommy. She also traveled to Peru to see Machu Picchu and took trips to most of the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Canada and Bermuda. Wanda was a life-long learner and reader. She had an annual competition with her granddaughter Kelly to see who could read the most books. Wanda won in most cases, reading 40 to 50 books a year. Wanda also enjoyed gardening and spent many hours in her yard. Wanda loved to go antiquing and had collected many valuable pieces of antique furniture for her home. Wanda had a deep love of the Lord and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in DeLand for 45 years. Wanda is survived by her two sons, T. Scott Lipscomb of Dallas and her son Robert Lipscomb and his wife, Chris, of Orlando. Wanda has four grandchildren: Dana Lipscomb, James Roy, Jessica Lipscomb McIntyre (and husband Scott McIntyre) and Kelly Lipscomb. Wanda is also survived by her three sisters, Marie Hammond of DeLand, Shirly Elmore of Staunton, VA, and Patty Hankins of Seattle, WA. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian DeLand on Saturday, May 14 at 2:00 PM in the main sanctuary.
